Why we built Detective
In 2011, my co-founder J's bike was stolen. He and a group of friends tracked listings daily until they finally found it. Police got involved and recovered the bike — and in the process, uncovered a multi-million dollar fencing operation selling all kinds of stolen goods.
Then, a few years ago, my home in Washington, DC, was broken into. Among the electronics and jewelry taken was a retirement watch that had belonged to my husband’s grandfather — inscribed and irreplaceable.
We had documentation, even serial numbers for some items. So we searched. My husband spent hours every day combing through eBay, Craigslist, and other marketplaces. Weeks later, he spotted a few of our stolen pieces for sale. With the help of police, we were able to recover some of them. But the process was slow, draining, and frustrating.
We realized: this happens all the time. So we built the 529 Detective to help you find your stolen bike faster.
