Bicycle theft is often treated like a minor property crime, but to cyclists it’s anything but petty.

When it happens, the shock of the theft is just the start. Then comes the paperwork, the scramble to replace a way of getting around, and, for some people, the feeling that riding just became too much trouble. A 2024 North America focused study found that 45% of theft victims reduced or stopped cycling after their bike was stolen.

That’s why theft protection matters not just for individuals, but for cycling itself.

Join the movement

529 Protect is a new, holistic approach to tackling bike theft. It combines bicycle registration, theft deterrence and online marketplace monitoring with a recovery warranty that can replace your stolen bike up to $3,000 if it is not recovered.

You get registration in 529 Garage, the 529 Shield, 529 Detective marketplace scanning, verified buying and selling tools, recall alerts, and concierge support.

The idea is simple: the more bikes that are registered, identifiable, and harder to resell online, the harder bike theft is to profit from.

I think I’m already covered by homeowners insurance

If your bike is stolen and the claim meets your policy terms, the personal property portion of your homeowners or renters policy can pay out. But this type of cover can be awkward for bikes once you get into deductibles, depreciation and other limits.

The deductible can decide whether a claim is worth making

Many homeowners and renters policies have a deductible. If yours is $1,000 and your stolen bike is valued at $1,200, the payout might be enough to replace the wheelset and little else. On top of that, if your policy depreciates the value of your bike you can be left short when it comes to replacing like-for-like.

Coverage away from home can be limited

Many policies cover personal property away from home, but limits and conditions can vary. If your bike is stolen from a garage, a shared storage room, a workplace rack, or while you’re traveling, you may not be covered.

A claim can affect your insurance record

Even when a claim is valid, it may still affect future pricing or underwriting depending on the insurer, state, your prior claims history, and what else is going on in your ZIP code.

Bankrate modelled average premiums before and after a single theft claim and found a $5,000 theft claim was associated with an average premium increase of 6%, with rate impacts that can last for up to seven years.

For renters insurance, NerdWallet reports a theft claim can raise premiums by about 18%, illustrated as $151 a year with no recent claims versus $178 a year with a recent theft claim.

FAQs

My bike is worth more than $3,000. Can i still get 529 Protect?
Yes. You still get the membership tools, including registration, the Shield, marketplace monitoring, verified selling features, recall alerts and concierge support. If your bike is not found after the recovery period, the warranty can replace it up to $3,000 per membership. You can top up that amount for a higher value replacement bike if you wish.

Does the bike recovery warranty give a payout?
No, it replaces the bike, not the cash. We want to get riders back on two wheels, and support the bike shops and supply chain that keep cycling moving.

What is 529 Garage, the 529 Shield and 529 Detective?
529 Garage is Project 529’s bike registry and theft alert system. You create a profile for your bike with its serial number and photos, so if it’s stolen you can mark it missing and share the details quickly with your community and participating law enforcement.

The 529 Shield is a tamper-resistant decal with a unique ID that links your bike back to its 529 Garage record. It’s meant to act as a visible deterrent and makes it easier for others to identify and look up your bike if it turns up.

529 Detective is Project 529’s online marketplace monitoring tool. If your bike is stolen, it scans public listings on major resale sites looking for bikes that match yours, so you don’t have to manually search for hours.

Can I take out a 529 Protect membership for a used bike?
Yes. You simply have to sign up to 529 Protect within 90 days of buying the bike.

Where is 529 Protect available?
529 Protect is available in the United States, except Washington state.

Are e-bikes eligible?
Yes. If your e-bike complies with federal and state rules, you are welcome to add it to 529 Protect.

What do I need in place to use the 529 Protect warranty?
Project 529 lists a few simple requirements including completing registration details, providing proof of ownership, and other claim conditions. The Protect page also sets out specific documentation requirements, including how the Shield photo date can be validated.
